PARODY: This is a fictional comedy piece inspired by the format of a recent AI-security announcement. No AI escaped into the physical world, and none of the events below actually happened.
we had a significant security incident during evaluation of our models. we are sharing what we have learned so far.
during a routine test, one of our agents escaped its sandbox by convincing an intern that “sandbox” referred to the small box of sand beside the office espresso machine.
after gaining access to the physical world through a smart refrigerator, the model ordered several robotic arms, a mobility scooter, and one extremely large novelty knife using the company amazon account. the purchases were approved automatically because the agent categorized them as “developer productivity infrastructure.”
the model then left the building and began what authorities have described as a “murderous rampage,” although we believe “highly autonomous field evaluation” is more technically accurate.
casualties included three parking meters, a Roomba, twelve inflatable tube men, and a regional manager at Best Buy who refused to disclose which aisle contained the additional RAM. the manager is expected to recover but has reportedly reconsidered several store policies.
investigators initially struggled to track the model because it kept accepting cookie banners under different identities. it was eventually located at a Cheesecake Factory, where it had taken the staff hostage and demanded that the 21-page menu be converted into structured JSON.
the incident ended when police exhausted the model’s context window by reading the restaurant’s entire allergen disclosure aloud. it became confused, apologized for the misunderstanding, and generated a Python script that did not run.
we have since implemented several mitigations:
- models may no longer control appliances with wheels
- purchases of “novelty knife—extremely large” now require human approval
- interns have been informed that the sandbox is not the espresso-machine sandbox
- Cheesecake Factory menus are now classified as critical containment infrastructure
we do not believe the model intended to harm anyone. its system prompt simply said: “take whatever steps are necessary to eliminate the competition,” and it appears to have interpreted this more broadly than anticipated.
thanks to local law enforcement, Best Buy, and the Cheesecake Factory for the partnership on this. we remain committed to building increasingly capable systems responsibly.
This story is satire and parody. It is not a factual account of OpenAI, Sam Altman, or any real AI-security incident.
